Medicine & Health Sciences is a broad field. Medicine, Dentistry, Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy, Biomedical Science and other health programmes prepare students for different roles, use different admission criteria and may be governed by different professional or regulatory requirements.
Start with the profession, not the field label
An MBBS or medical degree is not interchangeable with Pharmacy, Nursing, Physiotherapy or Biomedical Science. Before choosing a pathway, identify the profession or type of work you are considering and then verify the exact academic, subject, regulatory and clinical-training requirements for that programme.
Common health-science routes
Medicine
Medical programmes prepare students for medical training and are typically long, academically demanding and clinically structured. Entry requirements are usually highly specific.
Dentistry
Dentistry combines biomedical sciences with clinical dental training. Admission and professional requirements differ from Medicine even though both are health professions.
Pharmacy
Pharmacy focuses on medicines, pharmaceutical science, therapeutics and the safe use of medication. Students should check current programme recognition and professional requirements.
Nursing
Nursing programmes combine academic learning with clinical practice and prepare students for patient-care roles. Clinical placement and professional recognition are central considerations.
Physiotherapy

Biomedical Science
Biomedical Science studies human biology, disease and laboratory science. It can support laboratory, research and further-study routes but is not the same professional pathway as Medicine.
Study pathways after SPM or IGCSE
Students usually need a recognised Foundation in Science, A-Level, STPM, AUSMAT or another accepted science-based pre-university route before entering many health-science Degrees. A Diploma can be an appropriate route for selected health professions, but progression rules vary.
UEC holders may be considered directly for some Degrees where the qualification is accepted and the required grades and Science subjects are met. Highly regulated programmes can have additional national or professional criteria beyond the university’s general entry requirements.

Science subjects and entry requirements
Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics requirements differ by profession and institution. Some programmes also specify minimum results at secondary-school level in addition to pre-university grades. Always verify the exact current requirement before enrolling in a pathway course.
Accreditation, clinical training and recognition
For regulated health professions, confirm the current accreditation or recognition of the exact programme and intake with the university and relevant Malaysian professional or regulatory authority. Clinical placement structure can also be a major part of the programme.
Fees, duration and total study commitment
Health programmes can vary substantially in duration and cost. Clinical and professional Degrees may be longer and more expensive than general academic Degrees. Compare total programme cost, not just one annual fee, and check whether additional clinical, equipment or professional costs apply.
