What to study after IGCSE?

IGCSE is usually the point where you choose your next academic qualification—not your final university degree. Start with the degree or destination you may want later, then choose a Foundation, A-Level, other Pre-University or Diploma route that keeps that progression realistic.

Can you go straight to a Degree after IGCSE?

Typically, no. IGCSE is a secondary-school qualification, while bachelor programmes normally require a recognised post-secondary or Pre-University qualification. For most students, the real decision after IGCSE is which qualification should come next—and whether that route will be accepted by the degree and university you may want later.

01

Foundation

Often around one year and designed to prepare you for related degrees. Best when your broad field and preferred university pathway are already reasonably clear.

02

A-Level

Academic and subject-based. Useful when you want broad recognition and may apply across several universities or countries.

03

AUSMAT / other Pre-U

Can offer different assessment styles or destination pathways. Compare subjects, assessment method and recognition before enrolling.

04

Diploma

More applied and longer than many Pre-U routes, but normally gives you a standalone qualification and may support progression to a related degree.

Do not choose only by speed. A one-year pathway is not useful if its subjects or recognition do not lead to the degree you eventually want.

Plan backwards from the Degree

Your Pre-U subjects can affect which Degrees stay open later.

Medicine and health programmes may need specific Sciences. Engineering commonly requires strong Mathematics and Physics preparation. Computing programmes can have Mathematics requirements. The safest order is to decide your likely field first, then select a pathway and subjects that preserve that option.

Frequently asked questions

IGCSE pathway questions students and parents ask us

Can I enter a Degree directly after IGCSE?

Typically, no. IGCSE is normally a secondary-school qualification. Bachelor programmes generally require a recognised Pre-University, Foundation, Diploma or other post-secondary qualification before Degree entry.

Is Foundation or A-Level better after IGCSE?

Neither is universally better. Foundation can be efficient when your field and university pathway are fairly clear. A-Level can make sense when you want broader university or country choice and are comfortable with a strongly academic route.

Can I take a Diploma after IGCSE?

Many institutions offer Diploma routes to eligible IGCSE students, but grade, subject and programme requirements vary. Diploma is often more applied and normally gives you a standalone qualification.

How many IGCSE credits do I need?

There is no single number that safely applies to every pathway. The required grades and subjects depend on the institution, qualification and intended field. Always check the actual programme requirement.

Do my IGCSE subjects matter for Medicine, Engineering or Computing?

Yes. Your IGCSE subjects can matter for entry into the next pathway, and the subjects you choose in Pre-U can affect later Degree eligibility. Science and Mathematics planning is especially important for technical and professional fields.

Can GoUni help compare IGCSE pathways for free?

Yes. GoUni provides free pathway, course, university, scholarship and application guidance. We can help you compare realistic routes based on your results, interests, budget and intended destination.
