UK Student Visa Guide for Malaysian Students 2026
Applying for a UK Student visa from Malaysia can feel complicated, especially when visa rules, financial requirements and post-study work policies keep changing.
The good news is that Malaysian students have some advantages under the current UK immigration system. Malaysia is included in the list of nationalities that normally do not need to submit financial evidence upfront with a Student visa application. However, this does not mean the financial requirement disappears — you must still meet it, and UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) can ask to see the evidence during processing.
For students planning to start a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree, PhD or another eligible programme in the UK, this guide explains what you need to know about the UK Student visa in 2026.
Which UK visa do Malaysian students need?
Most Malaysian students going to the UK for a full-time university programme will apply for the Student visa, which replaced the former Tier 4 (General) student visa.
You can generally apply for a Student visa if you are aged 16 or above, have been offered a place by a licensed UK student sponsor, meet the relevant financial requirements and satisfy the English-language requirement.
Do not confuse the Student visa with the Short-term Study visa.
The Short-term Study visa is specifically for English-language courses lasting more than six months and up to 11 months. For eligible study lasting six months or less, the Standard Visitor route may apply instead. A full bachelor’s, master’s or PhD programme normally requires a Student visa.
UK Student visa costs in 2026
As of August 2026, the Student visa application fee is £558 when applying from outside the UK.
You must also pay the Immigration Health Surcharge (IHS) as part of the application. The current student rate is £776 per person per year, although the total amount you actually pay depends on the length of immigration permission granted rather than simply the academic length of your course.
This means students should budget separately for visa and immigration costs on top of tuition fees, accommodation, flights and living expenses.
Do not convert the £558 visa fee or IHS into a fixed Malaysian ringgit amount too early, because the final RM amount can vary with the applicable exchange rate and payment arrangements at the time of application.
What documents do Malaysian students need?
Your exact document list depends on your course, age, funding arrangements and personal circumstances. The core document requirements begin with your current passport or other valid travel document and your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your UK education provider.
Depending on your circumstances, you may also need:
- financial evidence showing sufficient tuition and living funds;
- a valid TB test certificate;
- an ATAS certificate for certain postgraduate or sensitive subject areas;
- parental or legal guardian consent if you are under 18;
- evidence of your relationship to your parent or guardian if you are under 18;
- written consent from an official financial sponsor where applicable;
- academic or English-language evidence requested in connection with your CAS or visa application.
UKVI requires a current passport or valid travel document. There is no general Student visa rule stating that every Malaysian applicant’s passport must have “at least six months remaining” in the way the previous version of this guide suggested.
What is a CAS?
The Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies, usually called the CAS, is an electronic record created by your licensed UK university or education provider.
Your CAS contains important information about your programme, including details UKVI uses when assessing your Student visa application.
You cannot complete a Student visa application without a valid CAS reference.
Before applying, carefully compare the information on your CAS with your passport and application form. Your name, date of birth, course information and other personal details should be consistent.
If you notice an error, contact the university before submitting the visa application rather than assuming UKVI will correct it automatically.
How much money do you need for a UK Student visa in 2026?
The financial requirement consists of two main parts: your applicable course fees and your required living costs.
The course-fee requirement is based on the amount shown on your CAS.
For living costs, the current UKVI requirement is:
Studying in London: £1,529 per month for up to nine months.
Studying outside London: £1,171 per month for up to nine months.
That means the maximum standard maintenance calculation is £13,761 for London or £10,539 outside London, before adding any tuition amount that still needs to be covered.
For UKVI purposes, “London” means the City of London and the 32 London boroughs. A university being relatively close to London does not automatically make it a London-based course for the financial calculation.
Do Malaysian students need to submit bank statements?
This is an important point because a lot of outdated advice online gets it wrong.
Malaysia is currently included in UKVI’s list of nationalities that normally do not need to provide financial evidence upfront when submitting a Student visa application.
This exemption is based on the applicant’s qualifying nationality — not because the student is studying at a Russell Group university or a particular type of institution.
However, Malaysian students must still genuinely satisfy the financial requirement. UKVI has the right to request evidence during the application process.
For that reason, GoUni recommends preparing your financial documents correctly even when you are not initially asked to upload them.
Being exempt from submitting evidence is not the same thing as being exempt from having the required money.
The 28-day financial rule
If financial evidence is required or requested, the required amount normally needs to have been held for at least 28 consecutive days.
The end of that 28-day period must fall within 31 days before the date of your visa application.
The account must give immediate access to the money. UKVI accepts certain personal bank or building-society accounts and other approved forms of evidence, but does not accept assets such as cryptocurrency, stocks and shares or overdrafts as financial evidence for this purpose.
If your funds are held in Malaysian ringgit, UKVI uses the OANDA spot exchange rate on the date of application when converting the amount into pounds sterling.
Because exchange rates move, it is sensible to maintain a buffer above the exact minimum rather than holding an amount that only just meets the requirement.
Can parents provide the money?
Yes.
UKVI allows students to rely on money held by a parent, provided the relevant requirements are met. If requested, you may need evidence relating to the account together with confirmation from your parent that you have permission to use the money for your studies.
The same 28-day financial rule applies when parental funds are being used.
This is particularly relevant for Malaysian school leavers progressing from SPM, UEC, IGCSE, A-Level, STPM or Foundation into a UK university.
Do Malaysian students need a TB test?
For many Malaysian students studying in the UK for more than six months, the answer is yes.
A TB certificate is generally required where you are coming to the UK for more than six months and have lived for at least six months in Malaysia or another country covered by the TB rules, including a period within the six months before your application. Malaysia is on the relevant UKVI country list.
Your test must be completed at a Home Office-approved clinic.
As of May 2026, approved testing locations in Malaysia include facilities in Kuala Lumpur, Penang, Port Dickson, Sabah and Sarawak. Clinic availability and charges can change, so check the current GOV.UK approved-clinic list before booking.
A UK TB certificate is generally valid for six months from the date it is issued, subject to the applicable certificate details.
Do not use an ordinary health-screening clinic unless it is on the Home Office-approved list.
What are the English-language requirements?
Student visa applicants usually need to demonstrate an appropriate level of English.
For study at degree level or above, the usual requirement is equivalent to CEFR B2.
For study below degree level, the usual requirement is CEFR B1.
Depending on the university and your qualifications, this does not always mean you personally need to take IELTS for UKVI. A recognised higher education provider may assess English itself for degree-level study, and there are other permitted ways of demonstrating the required level.
Always follow the English-language conditions stated by your university and CAS process rather than assuming that one test applies to every applicant.
What is ATAS and who needs it?
Some students studying or researching certain sensitive subjects at postgraduate level may need an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate.
It is more commonly relevant to particular areas of science, engineering and technology than to general business, management or humanities programmes.
If ATAS applies to your course, it should be dealt with before the Student visa application where required. Do not leave it until the final few weeks before departure.
When should you apply for your Student visa?
If you are applying from Malaysia, you can normally submit your Student visa application up to six months before your course begins.
UKVI says applications made outside the UK usually receive a decision within approximately three weeks, although processing times can vary and faster services may sometimes be available for an additional charge.
Do not treat three weeks as a guaranteed deadline.
Students should allow time for their CAS, TB screening where required, financial preparation, identity verification and any additional documents requested by UKVI.
For a September intake, completing your university conditions and CAS process early can make the visa stage much less stressful.
Biometrics and eVisa in 2026
The UK immigration system has moved towards digital immigration status.
When you apply, you will be told whether you need to verify your identity using the UK Immigration: ID Check app or attend a visa application centre to provide fingerprints and a photograph.
If the Student visa application is successful, you will receive an eVisa, which is the digital record of your UK immigration status.
Students should make sure they create or access their UKVI account and link the correct travel document to it before travelling.
Can international students work in the UK?
Many Student visa holders are permitted to work, but the conditions depend on the programme and sponsor.
Students on an eligible full-time degree-level course with a higher education provider that has a track record of compliance can generally work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full-time during official vacation periods.
For eligible full-time study below degree level, the term-time limit is normally 10 hours per week.
Some other categories of study do not carry work permission. Student visa holders are also subject to restrictions such as the prohibition on self-employment and certain occupations.
Always check the actual conditions attached to your immigration permission and your university’s official term dates.
Do not assume that “20 hours” automatically applies to every international student in every type of course.
Can Malaysian students bring dependants?
The rules became significantly more restrictive from January 2024.
Most students on ordinary taught bachelor’s and taught master’s programmes cannot automatically bring a partner or children as Student dependants.
Under the current rules, dependants may generally accompany students who are government-sponsored on an eligible course lasting more than six months or certain postgraduate students. For postgraduate courses starting on or after 1 January 2024, the course normally needs to be a PhD, other doctorate or research-based higher degree for the dependant route to apply.
Where eligible dependants are coming, additional financial requirements apply. The current maintenance amount for each dependant is £845 per month in London or £680 per month outside London, for up to nine months.
Families should therefore check dependant eligibility before accepting a university offer if travelling together is an important part of the study plan.
What happens after graduation? Graduate Route changes
The UK Graduate visa remains available, but there is an important rule change that students starting university in 2026 should understand now.
If an eligible bachelor’s or master’s graduate applies for the Graduate visa on or before 31 December 2026, the visa lasts two years.
For eligible Graduate visa applications made on or after 1 January 2027, the standard duration becomes 18 months.
Students completing a PhD or other doctoral qualification continue to receive three years under the current rules.
This distinction matters because your Graduate visa length is determined by when you apply for the Graduate visa, not simply by the year in which you started your university course.
The Graduate visa cannot itself be extended, although eligible graduates may later switch into another immigration category such as the Skilled Worker route.
Common UK Student visa mistakes to avoid
Most problems can be reduced by checking the application as a complete package rather than treating each document separately.
Pay particular attention to inconsistencies between your passport, CAS and application form; financial evidence that fails the 28-day rule when evidence is required; using an incorrect maintenance amount; applying with a TB certificate from a non-approved clinic; overlooking ATAS where it applies; assuming Malaysia’s financial-evidence concession means you do not need the funds; and submitting an application before correcting an error on the CAS.
Another common mistake is relying on an old blog post, forum answer or previous student’s visa experience.
